Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Energy, Materials and Consumer Discretionary sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite fell 0.47%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Centerra Gold Inc (TO:CG), which rose 6.60% or 0.45 points to trade at 7.27 at the close. Cascades Inc . (TO:CAS) added 5.35% or 0.43 points to end at 8.46 and Alacer Gold Corp (TO:ASR) was up 3.66% or 0.130 points to 3.680 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Osisko Gold Ro (TO:OR), which lost 8.65% or 1.31 points to trade at 13.83 in late trade. Ero Copper Corp (TO:ERO) declined 7.02% or 1.29 points to end at 17.08 and First Quantum Minerals Ltd . (TO:FM) shed 6.93% or 0.98 points to 13.17.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 675 to 376 and 140 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 3.64% to 11.66.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was down 0.58% or 7.45 to $1278.25 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June fell 0.47% or 0.30 to hit $63.61 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract rose 0.01% or 0.01 to trade at $72.09 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.07% to 0.7443, while CAD/EUR rose 0.04% to 0.6644.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.18% at 97.375.
