Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Energy, Real Estate and Healthcare sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite lost 0.73%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Ballard Power Systems Inc (TSX:BLDP), which rose 16.51% or 2.75 points to trade at 19.41 at the close. OceanaGold Corporation (TSX:OGC) added 8.24% or 0.230 points to end at 3.020 and NovaGold Resources Inc (TSX:NG) was up 7.26% or 0.82 points to 12.12 in late trade.
Biggest losers included MTY Food Group Inc (TSX:MTY), which lost 10.12% or 3.57 points to trade at 31.69 in late trade. ShawCor Ltd . (TSX:SCL) declined 8.90% or 0.38 points to end at 3.89 and Bombardier Inc (TSX:BBDb) shed 7.94% or 0.050 points to 0.580.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 707 to 365 and 97 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was unchanged 0% to 11.27.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was up 1.34% or 23.10 to $1745.00 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July rose 0.10% or 0.04 to hit $38.98 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract fell 0.05% or 0.02 to trade at $41.16 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.08% to 0.7458, while CAD/EUR fell 0.18% to 0.6560.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.20% at 96.130.
