Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Energy, Healthcare and Clean Technology sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite declined 4.13%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Transcontinental Inc (TSX:TCLa), which rose 6.33% or 0.81 points to trade at 13.61 at the close. North West Company Inc (TSX:NWC) added 1.33% or 0.36 points to end at 27.51 and Primo Water Corp (TSX:PRMW) was up 0.95% or 0.16 points to 17.08 in late trade.
Biggest losers included ShawCor Ltd . (TSX:SCL), which lost 31.88% or 1.24 points to trade at 2.65 in late trade. Secure Energy Services Inc . (TSX:SES) declined 25.38% or 0.50 points to end at 1.47 and Baytex Energy Corp (TSX:BTE) shed 20.00% or 0.160 points to 0.640.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1071 to 79 and 49 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was unchanged 0% to 11.27.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was up 0.72% or 12.40 to $1733.10 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July fell 9.04% or 3.58 to hit $36.02 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract fell 8.53% or 3.56 to trade at $38.17 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 1.50% to 0.7342, while CAD/EUR fell 0.79% to 0.6502.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.88% at 96.797.
