Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Materials, Healthcare and Financials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite lost 2.84%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Whitecap Resources Inc . (TSX:WCP), which rose 16.56% or 0.26 points to trade at 1.83 at the close. Husky Energy Inc . (TSX:HSE) added 9.02% or 0.37 points to end at 4.47 and Crescent Point Energy Corp . (TSX:CPG) was up 7.73% or 0.14 points to 1.95 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Gildan Activewear Inc. (TSX:GIL), which lost 12.84% or 2.86 points to trade at 19.42 in late trade. Wesdome Gold Mines Ltd. (TSX:WDO) declined 8.02% or 0.93 points to end at 10.66 and Chorus Aviation Inc (TSX:CHR) shed 7.89% or 0.30 points to 3.50.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 692 to 384 and 92 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was unchanged 0% to 11.27.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was down 1.19% or 20.40 to $1693.00 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June rose 26.29% or 3.96 to hit $19.02 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract rose 9.74% or 2.36 to trade at $26.59 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.29% to 0.7182, while CAD/EUR fell 0.97% to 0.6558.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.62% at 99.025.
