India shares lower at close of trade; Nifty 50 down 1.92%

Investing.com – India equities were lower at the close on Monday, as losses in the Real Estate, Capital Goods and Banking sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in NSE, the Nifty 50 fell 1.92%, while the BSE Sensex 30 index lost 2.00%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the Nifty 50 were Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (NS:IOC), which rose 3.51% or 4.55 points to trade at 134.35 at the close. Bharat Petroleum Corp. Ltd. (NS:BPCL) added 1.72% or 5.60 points to end at 330.25 and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (NS:HPCL) was up 0.29% or 0.65 points to 226.70 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Kotak Mahindra Bank Ltd. (NS:KTKM), which lost 6.11% or 78.15 points to trade at 1198.35 in late trade. Indiabulls Housing Finance Ltd (NS:INBF) declined 4.79% or 34.35 points to end at 686.60 and UltraTech Cement Ltd (NS:ULTC) shed 4.01% or 157.50 points to 3776.55.

The top performers on the BSE Sensex 30 were Coal India Ltd (BO:COAL) which rose 0.76% to 238.60, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (BO:MRTI) which was up 0.49% to settle at 7350.10 and Yes Bank Ltd (BO:YESB) which lost 0.45% to close at 165.35.

The worst performers were Kotak Mahindra Bank Ltd. (BO:KTKM) which was down 6.56% to 1198.15 in late trade, Reliance Industries Ltd (BO:RELI) which lost 3.95% to settle at 1088.50 and Asian Paints Ltd. (BO:ASPN) which was down 3.48% to 1272.70 at the close.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1319 to 257 and 51 ended unchanged; on the Bombay Stock Exchange, 1838 fell and 616 advanced, while 129 ended unchanged on the India National Stock Exchange.

The India VIX, which measures the implied volatility of Nifty 50 options, was up 9.94% to 20.4375 a new 1-month high.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was down 0.02% or 0.25 to $1252.35 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in January fell 1.81% or 0.95 to hit $51.66 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract fell 1.64% or 1.01 to trade at $60.66 a barrel.

USD/INR was up 0.05% to 71.410, while EUR/INR rose 0.88% to 81.4365.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.17% at 96.637.
