Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the Oil & Gas, Utilities and Financials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 1.70% to hit a new 3-month high, while the S&P 500 index climbed 1.20%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 1.13%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Boeing Co (NYSE:BA), which rose 12.20% or 25.07 points to trade at 230.50 at the close. Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW) added 4.39% or 1.93 points to end at 45.90 and Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA) was up 3.68% or 1.67 points to 47.02 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which lost 1.04% or 0.67 points to trade at 63.67 in late trade. UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) declined 0.76% or 2.37 points to end at 309.48 and Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) shed 0.36% or 0.53 points to 146.77.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Coty Inc (NYSE:COTY) which rose 22.24% to 6.21, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd (NYSE:NCLH) which was up 19.75% to settle at 26.86 and Macerich Company (NYSE:MAC) which gained 17.65% to close at 13.13.
The worst performers were Amcor (NYSE:AMCR) which was down 3.49% to 10.50 in late trade, Keysight Technologies Inc (NYSE:KEYS) which lost 3.33% to settle at 102.87 and Linde PLC (DE:LINI) which was down 3.00% to 192.300 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Extraction Oil & Gas Inc (NASDAQ:XOG) which rose 247.91% to 1.480, RigNet Inc (NASDAQ:RNET) which was up 115.85% to settle at 2.86 and IZEA Inc (NASDAQ:IZEA) which gained 110.03% to close at 1.2600.
The worst performers were BIOLASE Inc (NASDAQ:BIOL) which was down 26.93% to 0.5399 in late trade, Artara Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:TARA) which lost 26.57% to settle at 36.26 and Ekso Bionics Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:EKSO) which was down 23.75% to 3.9500 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2389 to 521 and 41 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1994 rose and 699 declined, while 45 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 5.26% to 25.81.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was up 1.32% or 22.15 to $1705.15 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July fell 3.49% or 1.38 to hit $38.17 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract fell 0.05% or 0.02 to trade at $40.80 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.00% to 1.1292, while USD/JPY fell 0.01% to 108.41.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.24% at 96.685.
