These are the five factors that investors should take into account when making their decisions today:
1. New round of Russia-Ukraine negotiations
The Russian and Ukrainian delegations travelled to Turkey on Monday and a new round of talks is scheduled for Tuesday. Ukraine has already warned that it does not expect much progress.
2. Bank of England Quarterly Bulletin
At 13:00 local time, we will know the Bank of England (BoE) quarterly bulletin. At the last meeting, the BoE opted, as the US Federal Reserve (Fed), to raise interest rates.
3. Crypto remains bullish
The cryptocurrency sector remains bullish on Tuesday. Bitcoin is trading at $47,000 and Ethereum at $3,300.
4. Asia and the US stock market
The main Asian indices are mixed today. Nikkei is up 0.6%. Hong Kong's Hang Seng is up 0.4% and the Shanghai Composite is down 0.5%.
On Wall Street, the market ended yesterday in the green. The S&P 500 (0.7%), Nasdaq (1.3%) and Dow Jones (0.2%) closed higher.
5. Macroeconomic data
The main macroeconomic releases include German and Spanish retail sales, the Gfk consumer sentiment index in Germany and UK mortgage approvals.
In the US, we will see the Redbook retail sales index, The consumer confidence of The Conference Board and the API weekly crude oil stocks.
South African markets closed in the red yesterday after China announced a lockdown in Shanghai due to rising Covid-19 cases.
