Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Friday, as gains in the Materials, Energy and IT sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.51%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Pretium Resources Inc. (TO:PVG), which rose 13.66% or 1.30 points to trade at 10.82 at the close. Baytex Energy Corp (TO:BTE) added 12.90% or 0.32 points to end at 2.80 and CannTrust Holdings Inc (TO:TRST) was up 7.12% or 0.5400 points to 8.1200 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Eldorado Gold Corp (TO:ELD), which lost 17.81% or 0.99 points to trade at 4.57 in late trade. Enerflex Ltd . (TO:EFX) declined 6.30% or 1.11 points to end at 16.52 and Martinrea International Inc . (TO:MRE) shed 5.72% or 0.74 points to 12.20.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 665 to 373 and 136 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 3.12% to 11.49.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was up 0.65% or 8.30 to $1280.30 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June rose 0.08% or 0.05 to hit $61.86 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract rose 0.11% or 0.08 to trade at $70.83 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.42% to 0.7451, while CAD/EUR rose 0.20% to 0.6650.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.40% at 97.197.
