Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Healthcare, IT and Consumer Discretionary sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 1.46%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Transcontinental Inc (TO:TCLa), which rose 10.64% or 2.16 points to trade at 22.46 at the close. Aphria Inc (TO:APHA) added 9.62% or 0.990 points to end at 11.280 and Hudson's Bay Company (TO:HBC) was up 9.28% or 0.73 points to 8.60 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Crescent Point Energy Corp . (TO:CPG), which lost 6.12% or 0.26 points to trade at 3.99 in late trade. Bombardier Inc (TO:BBDb) declined 5.33% or 0.120 points to end at 2.130 and AltaGas Ltd (TO:ALA) shed 5.15% or 0.76 points to 14.00.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 804 to 343 and 92 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 3.30% to 16.97.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 0.64% or 7.80 to $1227.70 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in January fell 2.50% or 1.29 to hit $50.27 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract fell 2.35% or 1.42 to trade at $58.98 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.16% to 0.7534, while CAD/EUR fell 0.50% to 0.6627.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.56% at 96.735.
