Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Energy, Materials and IT sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite added 2.45%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Secure Energy Services Inc . (TSX:SES), which rose 25.84% or 0.23 points to trade at 1.12 at the close. Alamos Gold Inc (TSX:AGI) added 11.46% or 1.07 points to end at 10.41 and Torex Gold Resources Inc (TSX:TXG) was up 11.18% or 1.77 points to 17.60 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Great Canadian Gaming Corporation (TSX:GC), which lost 3.36% or 0.83 points to trade at 23.87 in late trade. Brookfield Property Partners LP (TSX:BPY_u) declined 2.66% or 0.32 points to end at 11.72 and CAE Inc. (TSX:CAE) shed 2.64% or 0.55 points to 20.26.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 733 to 317 and 108 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was unchanged 0% to 11.27.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was up 2.95% or 49.75 to $1737.55 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June rose 21.78% or 2.52 to hit $14.09 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract rose 7.92% or 1.53 to trade at $20.86 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.30% to 0.7056, while CAD/EUR rose 0.69% to 0.6522.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.14% at 100.517.
