Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Real Estate, REITs and Energy sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite declined 7.31% to hit a new 5-year low.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were BlackBerry Ltd (TSX:BB), which rose 10.90% or 0.45 points to trade at 4.58 at the close. ARC Resources Ltd . (TSX:ARX) added 6.27% or 0.17 points to end at 2.88 and Enerflex Ltd . (TSX:EFX) was up 3.87% or 0.21 points to 5.64 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Inter Pipeline Ltd (TSX:IPL), which lost 29.81% or 2.48 points to trade at 5.84 in late trade. Boardwalk REIT (TSX:BEI_u) declined 29.11% or 7.31 points to end at 17.80 and Keyera Corp . (TSX:KEY) shed 28.71% or 4.22 points to 10.48.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1090 to 73 and 44 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was unchanged 0% to 11.27.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was down 2.60% or 39.65 to $1486.15 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in May fell 16.21% or 4.43 to hit $22.90 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract fell 8.70% or 2.50 to trade at $26.23 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 1.75% to 0.6918, while CAD/EUR fell 0.97% to 0.6340.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 1.45% at 101.255.
