Canada stocks higher at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite up 0.34%

Investing.com – Canada stocks were higher after the close on Monday, as gains in the Energy, REITs and Real Estate sectors led shares higher.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite added 0.34% to hit a new all time high.

The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Stelco Holdings Inc (TSX:STLC), which rose 73.98% or 27.64 points to trade at 65.00 at the close. Meanwhile, Algoma Steel Group Inc (TSX:ASTL) added 13.32% or 1.34 points to end at 11.40 and Filo Mining Corp (TSX:FIL) was up 8.51% or 2.38 points to 30.36 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Canada Goose Holdings Inc (TSX:GOOS), which fell 9.45% or 1.69 points to trade at 16.20 at the close. Brookfield Renewable Energy Partners LP (TSX:BEP_u) declined 5.29% or 1.96 points to end at 35.07 and Ballard Power Systems Inc (TSX:BLDP) was down 4.42% or 0.16 points to 3.46.

Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 546 to 379 and 109 ended unchanged.

Shares in Stelco Holdings Inc (TSX:STLC) rose to all time highs; rising 73.98% or 27.64 to 65.00. Shares in Filo Mining Corp (TSX:FIL) rose to all time highs; gaining 8.51% or 2.38 to 30.36.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 6.65% to 8.50.

Gold Futures for August delivery was up 0.23% or 5.55 to $2,426.25 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in September fell 0.22% or 0.18 to hit $80.84 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract fell 0.22% or 0.19 to trade at $84.84 a barrel.

CAD/USD was unchanged 0.26% to 0.73, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.39% to 0.67.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.14% at 103.93.
