Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Monday, as losses in the REITs, Real Estate and Utilities sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite declined 5.26% to hit a new 5-year low.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Semafo Inc . (TSX:SMF), which rose 39.20% or 0.780 points to trade at 2.770 at the close. Silvercorp Metals Inc (TSX:SVM) added 31.58% or 1.14 points to end at 4.75 and Pan American Silver Corp (TSX:PAAS) was up 14.80% or 2.58 points to 20.01 in late trade.

Biggest losers included NFI Group Inc (TSX:NFI), which lost 32.85% or 5.62 points to trade at 11.49 in late trade. AltaGas Ltd (TSX:ALA) declined 22.40% or 2.69 points to end at 9.32 and Killam Properties Inc (TSX:KMP_u) shed 22.22% or 3.98 points to 13.93.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 912 to 218 and 57 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

 

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was unchanged 0% to 11.27.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was up 5.24% or 77.75 to $1562.35 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in May rose 4.55% or 1.03 to hit $23.66 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract rose 1.30% or 0.35 to trade at $27.33 a barrel.

CAD/USD was down 1.23% to 0.6882, while CAD/EUR fell 1.50% to 0.6417.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.22% at 103.270.
