Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Friday, as losses in the Materials, Healthcare and Energy sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite fell 1.78% to hit a new 1-month low.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Avigilon Corp (TO:AVO), which rose 1.57% or 0.14 points to trade at 9.07 at the close. Manulife Financial Corporation (TO:MFC) added 1.34% or 0.24 points to end at 18.16 and TransAlta Corp (TO:TA) was up 1.33% or 0.08 points to 6.10 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Crescent Point Energy Corp . (TO:CPG), which lost 10.41% or 2.11 points to trade at 18.15 in late trade. Silver Standard Resources Inc . (TO:SSO) declined 8.85% or 1.53 points to end at 15.76 and Semafo Inc . (TO:SMF) shed 8.75% or 0.54 points to 5.63.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 894 to 259 and 141 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 16.17% to 16.02 a new 1-month high.
In commodities trading, Gold for December delivery was down 0.68% or 9.15 to $1332.45 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in October fell 4.16% or 1.98 to hit $45.64 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract fell 4.32% or 2.16 to trade at $47.83 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.81% to 0.7669, while CAD/EUR fell 0.50% to 0.6831.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.33% at 95.35.
