Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Oil & Gas, Basic Materials and Industrials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.78%, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.69%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 0.75%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Boeing Co (NYSE:BA), which rose 4.05% or 8.10 points to trade at 208.34 at the close. Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW) added 3.48% or 2.08 points to end at 61.81 and Visa Inc Class A (NYSE:V) was up 2.74% or 6.19 points to 232.36 in late trade.
Biggest losers included UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH), which lost 0.88% or 4.16 points to trade at 468.41 in late trade. Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) declined 0.82% or 1.41 points to end at 170.88 and Coca-Cola Co (NYSE:KO) shed 0.74% or 0.45 points to 60.56.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were United Parcel Service Inc (NYSE:UPS) which rose 14.08% to 230.69, Mosaic Co (NYSE:MOS) which was up 9.11% to settle at 43.59 and CF Industries Holdings Inc (NYSE:CF) which gained 8.12% to close at 74.46.
The worst performers were AT&T Inc (NYSE:T) which was down 4.24% to 24.42 in late trade, Broadridge Financial Solutions Inc (NYSE:BR) which lost 3.88% to settle at 153.04 and Trane Technologies plc (NYSE:TT) which was down 3.42% to 167.18 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Synaptogenix Inc (NASDAQ:SNPX) which rose 29.36% to 10.090, Ebang International Holdings (NASDAQ:EBON) which was up 27.42% to settle at 1.160 and Biofrontera Inc (NASDAQ:BFRI) which gained 26.84% to close at 4.30.
The worst performers were Knightscope Inc (NASDAQ:KSCP) which was down 41.87% to 12.44 in late trade, Sio Gene Therapies Inc (NASDAQ:SIOX) which lost 23.08% to settle at 0.900 and DLH Holdings Corp (NASDAQ:DLHC) which was down 18.82% to 15.23 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2429 to 868 and 92 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2880 rose and 1024 declined, while 170 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 11.56% to 21.96.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was up 0.35% or 6.30 to $1801.30 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in March rose 0.22% or 0.19 to hit $88.34 a barrel, while the April Brent oil contract fell 0.03% or 0.03 to trade at $89.38 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.03% to 1.1272, while USD/JPY fell 0.03% to 114.68.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.29% at 96.255.
