Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Financials, Basic Materials and Industrials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.36%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.52%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.67%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Coca-Cola Company (NYSE:KO), which rose 0.85% or 0.36 points to trade at 42.52 at the close. Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) added 0.81% or 1.19 points to end at 147.87 and Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE:XOM) was up 0.61% or 0.51 points to 83.53 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT), which lost 4.15% or 4.09 points to trade at 94.49 in late trade. American Express Company (NYSE:AXP) declined 1.76% or 1.44 points to end at 80.48 and Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) shed 1.47% or 0.95 points to 63.98.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Monster Beverage 1990 Corp (NASDAQ:MNST) which rose 13.28% to 47.59, Best Buy Co Inc (NYSE:BBY) which was up 6.31% to settle at 44.80 and Urban Outfitters Inc (NASDAQ:URBN) which gained 5.38% to close at 26.85.
The worst performers were Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) which was down 4.15% to 94.49 in late trade, Freeport-McMoran Copper & Gold Inc (NYSE:FCX) which lost 4.04% to settle at 13.43 and Kroger Company (NYSE:KR) which was down 4.02% to 30.77 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Rennova Health Inc (NASDAQ:RNVA) which rose 31.51% to 2.170, Strongbridge Biopharma plc (NASDAQ:SBBP) which was up 29.51% to settle at 3.9500 and Karyopharm Thera (NASDAQ:KPTI) which gained 28.67% to close at 14.19.
The worst performers were China Auto Logistics Inc (NASDAQ:CALI) which was down 30.79% to 2.360 in late trade, Atlantic Alliance Partnership Corp (NASDAQ:AAPC) which lost 20.17% to settle at 15.55 and PTC Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:PTCT) which was down 19.73% to 10.58 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2251 to 898 and 61 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1634 fell and 854 advanced, while 99 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 8.21% to 11.51.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was down 1.18% or 14.75 to $1235.25 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in April fell 2.21% or 1.19 to hit $52.64 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract fell 2.25% or 1.27 to trade at $55.09 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.41% to 1.0504, while USD/JPY rose 0.65% to 114.47.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.45% at 102.20.
