Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Oil & Gas, Technology and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.59%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.80%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 1.66%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK), which rose 1.32% or 1.09 points to trade at 83.81 at the close. Visa Inc Class A (NYSE:V) added 1.31% or 2.80 points to end at 215.81 and American Express Company (NYSE:AXP) was up 1.15% or 2.06 points to 181.92 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE), which lost 3.26% or 5.67 points to trade at 168.15 in late trade. Salesforce.com Inc (NYSE:CRM) declined 3.13% or 9.70 points to end at 300.01 and Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) shed 1.82% or 2.75 points to 148.06.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Mastercard Inc (NYSE:MA) which rose 3.60% to 357.06, Ventas Inc (NYSE:VTR) which was up 3.60% to settle at 54.72 and Alliance Data Systems Corp (NYSE:ADS) which gained 3.37% to close at 78.13.
The worst performers were Perrigo Company PLC (NYSE:PRGO) which was down 12.29% to 41.60 in late trade, Advanced Micro Devices Inc (NASDAQ:AMD) which lost 6.12% to settle at 139.80 and Coterra Energy Inc (NYSE:CTRA) which was down 5.85% to 20.11 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were RenovoRx Inc (NASDAQ:RNXT) which rose 49.35% to 8.08, Nisun International Enterprise Development Group Co Ltd (NASDAQ:NISN) which was up 31.94% to settle at 16.77 and Unity Biotechnology Inc (NASDAQ:UBX) which gained 29.57% to close at 3.330.
The worst performers were Hycroft Mining Holding Corporation (NASDAQ:HYMC) which was down 37.50% to 1.050 in late trade, Yumanity Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:YMTX) which lost 34.79% to settle at 5.53 and Anpac Bio Medical Science Co Ltd (NASDAQ:ANPC) which was down 32.93% to 1.650 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2157 to 1092 and 112 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2609 fell and 1113 advanced, while 184 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 6.19% to 18.88.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.93% or 16.95 to $1847.75 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in December fell 3.48% or 2.93 to hit $81.22 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract fell 2.69% or 2.28 to trade at $82.50 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.94% to 1.1481, while USD/JPY rose 0.91% to 113.88.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.97% at 94.868.
