Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Oil & Gas, Basic Materials and Telecoms sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.72%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.47%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.16%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Salesforce Inc (NYSE:CRM), which rose 2.46% or 5.21 points to trade at 216.97 at the close. UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) added 2.38% or 10.90 points to end at 469.39 and Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK) was up 0.83% or 0.91 points to 110.23 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which lost 3.77% or 1.37 points to trade at 35.00 in late trade. Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) declined 3.57% or 4.05 points to end at 109.54 and Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) shed 3.46% or 7.62 points to 212.37.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Generac Holdings Inc (NYSE:GNRC) which rose 7.91% to 128.87, Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) which was up 5.34% to settle at 274.45 and PayPal Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:PYPL) which gained 3.70% to close at 68.89.
The worst performers were SolarEdge Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:SEDG) which was down 7.71% to 255.36 in late trade, Enphase Energy Inc (NASDAQ:ENPH) which lost 5.40% to settle at 171.99 and Warner Bros Discovery Inc (NASDAQ:WBD) which was down 4.77% to 12.19 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were VCI Global Ltd (NASDAQ:VCIG) which rose 156.18% to 7.25, Evelo Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ:EVLO) which was up 46.42% to settle at 0.18 and Dice Therapeutics (NASDAQ:DICE) which gained 37.19% to close at 46.44.
The worst performers were Surgalign Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:SRGA) which was down 81.97% to 0.22 in late trade, Dragonfly Energy Holdings Corp (NASDAQ:DFLI) which lost 46.24% to settle at 1.50 and Hitek Global (NASDAQ:HKIT) which was down 40.18% to 6.03 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2033 to 970 and 80 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2213 fell and 1363 advanced, while 130 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 2.18% to 13.88.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was down 1.16% or 22.95 to $1,948.25 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August fell 0.92% or 0.66 to hit $71.27 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract fell 0.25% or 0.19 to trade at $75.90 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.05% to 1.09, while USD/JPY fell 0.44% to 141.37.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.27% at 102.11.
