U.S. stocks lower at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average down 1.58%

Investing.com – U.S. stocks were lower after the close on Monday, as losses in the Financials, Healthcare and Consumer Services sectors led shares lower.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 1.58%, while the S&P 500 index lost 1.53%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 2.08%.

The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Wal-Mart Stores Inc (N:WMT), which rose 0.26% or 0.16 points to trade at 61.46 at the close. Meanwhile, Apple Inc (O:AAPL) added 0.09% or 0.09 points to end at 105.35 and Caterpillar Inc (N:CAT) was up 0.04% or 0.03 points to 67.99 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were EI du Pont de Nemours and Company (N:DD), which fell 5.30% or 3.53 points to trade at 63.07 at the close. JPMorgan Chase & Co (N:JPM) declined 3.00% or 1.97 points to end at 63.62 and Boeing Company (N:BA) was down 2.83% or 4.09 points to 140.50.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were Chesapeake Energy Corporation (N:CHK) which rose 10.00% to 4.95, CONSOL Energy Inc (N:CNX) which was up 8.48% to settle at 8.57 and Southwestern Energy Company (N:SWN) which gained 8.44% to close at 7.71.

The worst performers were Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc (N:CMG) which was down 6.47% to 448.81 in late trade, Fossil Group Inc (O:FOSL) which lost 6.07% to settle at 34.34 and Amazon.com Inc (O:AMZN) which was down 5.76% to 636.98 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Rubicon Technology Inc (O:RBCN) which rose 51.75% to 1.73, China Advanced Construction Materials (O:CADC) which was up 43.14% to settle at 2.190 and OptimumBank Holdings Inc (O:OPHC) which gained 43.18% to close at 0.530.

The worst performers were KBS Fashion Group Ltd (O:KBSF) which was down 25.00% to 2.10 in late trade, Perion Network Ltd (O:PERI) which lost 17.36% to settle at 3.00 and Blue Earth Inc (O:BBLU) which was down 17.20% to 0.414 at the close.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 2314 to 1112 and 6 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2039 fell and 640 advanced, while 23 ended unchanged.

Shares in Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc (N:CMG) fell to 52-week lows; losing 6.47% or 31.04 to 448.81. Shares in KBS Fashion Group Ltd (O:KBSF) fell to all time lows; falling 25.00% or 0.70 to 2.10.

The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 13.78% to 20.72.

Gold for February delivery was up 1.27% or 13.50 to $1073.70 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in February fell 0.34% or 0.12 to hit $36.91 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract rose 0.30% or 0.11 to trade at $37.39 a barrel.

EUR/USD was down 0.18% to 1.0835, while USD/JPY fell 0.67% to 119.42.

The US Dollar Index was up 0.15% at 98.92.
