Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Mining, Materials and Energy sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite fell 0.05%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Lucara Diamond Corp (TO:LUC), which rose 7.49% or 0.260 points to trade at 3.730 at the close. Norbord Inc (TO:OSB) added 3.62% or 1.03 points to end at 29.49 and Open Text Corporation (TO:OTC) was up 3.19% or 2.48 points to 80.19 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Teck Resources Ltd (TO:TCKb), which lost 6.02% or 1.12 points to trade at 17.47 in late trade. Alacer Gold Corp (TO:ASR) declined 5.88% or 0.200 points to end at 3.200 and Precision Drilling Corporation (TO:PD) shed 4.97% or 0.32 points to 6.12.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 571 to 547 and 163 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 0.08% to 12.30.
In commodities trading, Gold for August delivery was up 0.26% or 3.50 to $1332.80 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September fell 1.02% or 0.47 to hit $45.47 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract fell 0.62% or 0.29 to trade at $46.67 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.63% to 0.7676, while CAD/EUR fell 0.11% to 0.6967.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.56% at 97.10.
