Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the Energy, IT and Financials sectors propelled shares higher.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.84% to hit a new 1-month high.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Jamieson Wellness Inc (TSX:JWEL), which rose 3.89% or 1.40 points to trade at 37.38 at the close. Baytex Energy Corp (TSX:BTE) added 3.43% or 0.155 points to end at 4.675 and Lundin Mining Corporation (TSX:LUN) was up 3.36% or 0.360 points to 11.080 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Wesdome Gold Mines Ltd. (TSX:WDO), which lost 2.10% or 0.23 points to trade at 10.74 in late trade. Nuvei Corp (TSX:NVEI) declined 2.06% or 1.72 points to end at 81.84 and Aritzia Inc (TSX:ATZ) shed 1.84% or 1.10 points to 58.65

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 2.17% to 15.99.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 0.13% or 2.40 to $1818.90 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude Oil WTI Futures for delivery in March rose 0.58% or 0.48 to hit $83.78 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract rose 0.51% or 0.44 to trade at $86.50 a barrel.

CAD/USD was up 0.28% to 0.7988, while CAD/EUR rose 0.37% to 0.7003.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.04% at 95.203.
