Canada shares lower at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite down 0.39%

Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Friday, as losses in the Energy, Materials and Utilities sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite lost 0.39% to hit a new 52-week low.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Lightspeed Commerce Inc (TSX:LSPD), which rose 7.05% or 1.82 points to trade at 27.62 at the close. Aurora Cannabis Inc (TSX:ACB) added 6.88% or 0.11 points to end at 1.71 and Ballard Power Systems Inc (TSX:BLDP) was up 6.34% or 0.48 points to 8.05 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Vermilion Energy Inc . (TSX:VET), which lost 8.59% or 2.29 points to trade at 24.36 in late trade. Enerplus Corporation (TSX:ERF) declined 7.97% or 1.59 points to end at 18.35 and Tamarack Valley Energy Ltd (TSX:TVE) shed 7.60% or 0.40 points to 4.86.

Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 535 to 484 and 84 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 2.54% to 24.64.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was down 0.47% or 8.75 to $1,841.15 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July fell 6.53% or 7.68 to hit $109.91 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract fell 5.51% or 6.60 to trade at $113.21 a barrel.

CAD/USD was unchanged 0.52% to 0.77, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.01% to 0.73.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.97% at 104.42.
