Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Monday, as losses in the Energy, Healthcare and Materials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite declined 1.36% to hit a new 1-month low.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Shopify Inc (TSX:SHOP), which rose 3.76% or 44.73 points to trade at 1234.73 at the close. Ballard Power Systems Inc (TSX:BLDP) added 3.43% or 0.72 points to end at 21.71 and Lightspeed POS Inc (TSX:LSPD) was up 2.98% or 1.16 points to 40.08 in late trade.
Biggest losers included First Majestic Silver Corp. (TSX:FR), which lost 9.31% or 1.46 points to trade at 14.23 in late trade. HudBay Minerals Inc (TSX:HBM) declined 8.97% or 0.56 points to end at 5.68 and First Quantum Minerals Ltd . (TSX:FM) shed 8.76% or 1.28 points to 13.33.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 963 to 177 and 54 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was unchanged 0% to 11.27.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 2.27% or 44.50 to $1917.60 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November fell 3.53% or 1.46 to hit $39.86 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract fell 3.24% or 1.40 to trade at $41.75 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.73% to 0.7517, while CAD/EUR fell 0.05% to 0.6387.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.67% at 93.575.
