TORONTO, March 2 (Reuters) - Canada's benchmark stock index eked out a small gain in morning trade on Thursday as shares of a major oil producer surged on a strong earnings report, helping offset weakness among gold miners.

Canadian Natural Resources Ltd CNQ.TO , the country's largest independent petroleum producer, jumped 4.1 percent to C$40.05 after reporting a quarterly profit that blew past analysts' expectations. materials group, however, which includes precious and base metals miners and fertilizer companies, lost 1.4 percent as gold and copper prices were pressured by a stronger U.S. dollar on growing expectations the U.S. central bank will raise interest rates this month. Canadian economy grew at a faster pace than expected in the final quarter of last year, lifted by consumer spending and a rebound in activity in the housing market, while imports tumbled, data from Statistics Canada showed.
