Proactive Investors - Google has delayed the release of its large language rival to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, known as Gemini, according to a report by The Information.

The conversational artificial intelligence (AI) software was initially expected to be released in November but Google representatives told some cloud customers and business partners not to expect it until the first quarter of 2024, The Information reported, citing two people with direct knowledge.

Gemini is expected to be capable of powering everything from chatbots to features that either summarise text or generate original text based on what users want to read like email drafts, music lyrics, or news stories.

It follows the launch of Google's Bard chatbot and its PaLM 2 LLM (large language model). When released, it is expected to challenge ChatGPT’s dominance in the generative AI space.

In May, Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and parent company Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG), said in a blog post: “Gemini was created from the ground up to be multimodal, highly efficient at tool and API integrations and built to enable future innovations, like memory and planning.”

“While still early, we’re already seeing impressive multimodal capabilities not seen in prior models,” he added.

The delay puts the Alphabet-owned company even further behind rival Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT), a big investor in OpenAI.

Recent earnings from the two companies illustrate Microsoft’s leading position in the AI arms race.

The Information attributes part of Microsoft’s success to selling OpenAI’s technology to its customers.
