Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Monday, as losses in the Telecoms, Healthcare and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.02%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.07%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.18%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were 3M Company (NYSE:MMM), which rose 0.95% or 1.66 points to trade at 176.72 at the close. International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) added 0.68% or 1.04 points to end at 154.88 and American Express Company (NYSE:AXP) was up 0.63% or 0.40 points to 64.06 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK), which lost 1.49% or 0.93 points to trade at 61.35 in late trade. Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) declined 1.35% or 0.51 points to end at 37.16 and Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) shed 1.31% or 0.68 points to 51.20.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Michael Kors Holdings Limited (NYSE:KORS) which rose 3.69% to 49.62, Red Hat Inc (NYSE:RHT) which was up 2.91% to settle at 75.95 and ONEOK Inc (NYSE:OKE) which gained 2.84% to close at 47.39.
The worst performers were Chesapeake Energy Corporation (NYSE:CHK) which was down 7.35% to 6.810 in late trade, Wynn Resorts Limited (NASDAQ:WYNN) which lost 4.25% to settle at 103.96 and Stericycle Inc (NASDAQ:SRCL) which was down 3.99% to 78.00 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Sarepta Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:SRPT) which rose 73.85% to 48.940, Isle of Capri Casinos Inc (NASDAQ:ISLE) which was up 30.18% to settle at 22.04 and Clearside Biomedical Inc (NASDAQ:CLSD) which gained 24.73% to close at 10.4400.
The worst performers were Vical Inc (NASDAQ:VICL) which was down 22.28% to 3.0000 in late trade, Carver Bancorp Inc (NASDAQ:CARV) which lost 20.00% to settle at 4.000 and Tetralogic Phrm (NASDAQ:TLOG) which was down 16.71% to 0.1605 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2129 to 1034 and 85 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1442 rose and 1097 declined, while 85 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 1.30% to 15.57.
In commodities trading, Gold for December delivery was up 0.48% or 6.25 to $1316.45 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November rose 0.41% or 0.18 to hit $43.80 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract rose 0.31% or 0.14 to trade at $45.91 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.20% to 1.1177, while USD/JPY fell 0.41% to 101.86.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.30% at 95.77.
