Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the Oil & Gas, Technology and Utilities sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.11%, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.42%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 1.23%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Exxon Mobil Corp (NYSE:XOM), which rose 4.03% or 1.74 points to trade at 44.88 at the close. Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) added 2.45% or 4.27 points to end at 178.84 and Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) was up 2.24% or 2.00 points to 91.44 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Raytheon Technologies Corp (NYSE:RTX), which lost 3.70% or 2.26 points to trade at 58.85 in late trade. Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) declined 2.85% or 3.16 points to end at 107.72 and Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW) shed 2.56% or 0.87 points to 33.06.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Phillips 66 (NYSE:PSX) which rose 10.73% to 73.48, Valero Energy Corporation (NYSE:VLO) which was up 8.34% to settle at 63.66 and Marathon Petroleum Corp (NYSE:MPC) which gained 7.83% to close at 31.53.
The worst performers were Tyson Foods Inc (NYSE:TSN) which was down 7.82% to 55.32 in late trade, American Airlines Group (NASDAQ:AAL) which lost 7.71% to settle at 9.82 and Delta Air Lines Inc (NYSE:DAL) which was down 6.43% to 22.57 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Stemline Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:STML) which rose 154.84% to 12.11, Microvision Inc (NASDAQ:MVIS) which was up 147.58% to settle at 1.1000 and IZEA Inc (NASDAQ:IZEA) which gained 73.12% to close at 0.3793.
The worst performers were Borqs Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:BRQS) which was down 19.91% to 1.466 in late trade, Xcel Brands Inc (NASDAQ:XELB) which lost 16.07% to settle at 0.690 and Milestone Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:MIST) which was down 15.62% to 3.35 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1532 to 1333 and 66 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1404 rose and 1251 declined, while 58 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 3.28% to 35.97.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was up 0.58% or 9.90 to $1710.80 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June rose 6.98% or 1.38 to hit $21.16 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract rose 0.47% or 0.13 to trade at $27.97 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.04% to 1.0902, while USD/JPY rose 0.02% to 106.75.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.49% at 99.590.
