Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Oil & Gas, Telecoms and Technology sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.14%, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.27%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 0.14%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT), which rose 2.24% or 1.12 points to trade at 51.19 at the close. JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM) added 0.93% or 0.58 points to end at 62.95 and Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) was up 0.85% or 0.81 points to 95.91 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Boeing Company (NYSE:BA), which lost 0.93% or 1.23 points to trade at 131.52 in late trade. Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) declined 0.75% or 0.75 points to end at 98.82 and McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD) shed 0.64% or 0.79 points to 122.63.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Marathon Oil Corporation (NYSE:MRO) which rose 4.21% to 15.09, Kinder Morgan Inc (NYSE:KMI) which was up 3.84% to settle at 18.79 and CSRA Inc (NYSE:CSRA) which gained 3.54% to close at 23.70.
The worst performers were CarMax Inc (NYSE:KMX) which was down 4.92% to 48.14 in late trade, Endo International PLC (NASDAQ:ENDP) which lost 4.17% to settle at 15.40 and BorgWarner Inc (NYSE:BWA) which was down 3.97% to 33.35 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Delta Technology Holding Ltd (NASDAQ:DELT) which rose 173.47% to 1.3400, PhotoMedex Inc (NASDAQ:PHMD) which was up 53.04% to settle at 0.3520 and Immune Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:IMNP) which gained 35.22% to close at 0.5410.
The worst performers were Tetralogic Phrm (NASDAQ:TLOG) which was down 24.45% to 0.3702 in late trade, Neovasc Inc (NASDAQ:NVCN) which lost 23.53% to settle at 0.646 and Paratek Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:PRTK) which was down 19.71% to 13.28 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1811 to 1479 and 27 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1490 fell and 1037 advanced, while 82 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 0.60% to 18.48.
In commodities trading, Gold for August delivery was down 1.75% or 22.60 to $1269.50 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August fell 0.26% or 0.13 to hit $49.83 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract fell 0.20% or 0.10 to trade at $50.55 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.52% to 1.1256, while USD/JPY rose 0.84% to 104.81.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.48% at 94.13.
