Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the Technology, Utilities and Financials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.15%, while the S&P 500 index added 0.31%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 0.76%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT), which rose 1.42% or 1.40 points to trade at 100.01 at the close. Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) added 1.22% or 2.69 points to end at 223.26 and Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) was up 1.12% or 2.07 points to 187.18 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT), which lost 1.93% or 1.65 points to trade at 84.00 in late trade. General Electric Company (NYSE:GE) declined 1.76% or 0.24 points to end at 13.37 and Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) shed 1.72% or 2.18 points to 124.25.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Micron Technology Inc (NASDAQ:MU) which rose 3.89% to 54.48, Salesforce.com Inc (NYSE:CRM) which was up 2.95% to settle at 140.43 and Pacific Gas & Electric Co (NYSE:PCG) which gained 2.77% to close at 43.74.
The worst performers were Wynn Resorts Limited (NASDAQ:WYNN) which was down 7.89% to 154.14 in late trade, Apache Corporation (NYSE:APA) which lost 4.43% to settle at 44.68 and Cimarex Energy Co (NYSE:XEC) which was down 4.01% to 97.66 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were RadiSys Corporation (NASDAQ:RSYS) which rose 120.28% to 1.540, Adamis Pharma (NASDAQ:ADMP) which was up 50.00% to settle at 4.80 and SAExploration Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:SAEX) which gained 42.86% to close at 2.300.
The worst performers were MiMedx Group Inc (NASDAQ:MDXG) which was down 38.50% to 3.93 in late trade, MabVax Therapeutics Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:MBVX) which lost 36.49% to settle at 0.540 and Helios and Matheson Analytics Inc (NASDAQ:HMNY) which was down 29.03% to 0.220 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1608 to 1461 and 118 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1657 rose and 907 declined, while 113 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 3.05% to 15.60.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was down 0.93% or 11.70 to $1242.80 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August fell 0.24% or 0.18 to hit $73.97 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract fell 2.42% or 1.92 to trade at $77.31 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.40% to 1.1637, while USD/JPY rose 0.07% to 110.85.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.41% at 94.62.
