Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the Technology, Utilities and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.59%, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.65%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 1.11%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE), which rose 3.89% or 3.73 points to trade at 99.51 at the close. Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) added 2.78% or 5.42 points to end at 200.57 and Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) was up 2.62% or 9.15 points to 358.87 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA), which lost 2.02% or 0.89 points to trade at 43.24 in late trade. American Express Company (NYSE:AXP) declined 1.49% or 1.50 points to end at 99.44 and Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK) shed 1.48% or 1.15 points to 76.75.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Gap Inc (NYSE:GPS) which rose 8.26% to 11.54, Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc (NYSE:CMG) which was up 5.88% to settle at 1070.25 and Foot Locker Inc (NYSE:FL) which gained 5.09% to close at 29.52.
The worst performers were American Airlines Group (NASDAQ:AAL) which was down 6.75% to 14.92 in late trade, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd (NYSE:NCLH) which lost 6.20% to settle at 17.09 and Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (NYSE:RCL) which was down 6.17% to 51.86 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were SINTX Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:SINT) which rose 160.09% to 2.010, Kirklands Inc (NASDAQ:KIRK) which was up 74.38% to settle at 3.540 and Evoke Pharma Inc (NASDAQ:EVOK) which gained 61.70% to close at 3.800.
The worst performers were Urban One Inc Bats (NASDAQ:UONE) which was down 46.67% to 19.360 in late trade, Radio One Inc Class D (NASDAQ:UONEK) which lost 30.12% to settle at 2.900 and Atlas Financial Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:AFH) which was down 29.04% to 0.7380 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1518 to 1334 and 75 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1437 rose and 1267 declined, while 52 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 9.54% to 31.77.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was up 0.65% or 11.45 to $1764.45 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August rose 1.91% or 0.76 to hit $40.59 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract fell 0.02% or 0.01 to trade at $42.97 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.04% to 1.1262, while USD/JPY rose 0.01% to 106.88.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.59% at 96.998.
