Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Oil & Gas, Technology and Industrials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 1.60%, while the S&P 500 index added 1.78%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 2.40%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE), which rose 6.15% or 9.65 points to trade at 166.63 at the close. Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) added 5.86% or 11.04 points to end at 199.52 and American Express Company (NYSE:AXP) was up 3.22% or 5.02 points to 160.91 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK), which lost 1.14% or 0.87 points to trade at 75.54 in late trade. Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) declined 0.58% or 0.31 points to end at 52.78 and Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) shed 0.32% or 0.54 points to 167.21.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Citrix Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CTXS) which rose 13.63% to 95.05, Micron Technology Inc (NASDAQ:MU) which was up 10.54% to settle at 90.68 and Expedia Inc (NASDAQ:EXPE) which gained 9.14% to close at 177.27.
The worst performers were General Mills Inc (NYSE:GIS) which was down 4.03% to 65.06 in late trade, Kroger Company (NYSE:KR) which lost 3.60% to settle at 43.87 and Pfizer Inc (NYSE:PFE) which was down 3.39% to 58.95 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Reliance Global Group Inc (NASDAQ:RELI) which rose 78.69% to 5.450, Biofrontera Inc (NASDAQ:BFRI) which was up 44.75% to settle at 11.03 and IsoPlexis Corp (NASDAQ:ISO) which gained 40.82% to close at 6.90.
The worst performers were Aldeyra The (NASDAQ:ALDX) which was down 50.91% to 3.50 in late trade, DBV Technologies (NASDAQ:DBVT) which lost 48.52% to settle at 1.390 and CytomX Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:CTMX) which was down 40.00% to 3.870 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2671 to 604 and 88 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2889 rose and 880 declined, while 215 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 8.13% to 21.01.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was down 0.28% or 5.05 to $1789.55 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in February rose 3.92% or 2.69 to hit $71.30 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract unchanged 0.00% or 0.00 to trade at $74.03 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.02% to 1.1286, while USD/JPY rose 0.01% to 114.10.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.10% at 96.445.
