Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Technology, Consumer Goods and Financials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.34%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.43%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.95%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX), which rose 2.74% or 4.55 points to trade at 170.82 at the close. Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT) added 2.27% or 3.17 points to end at 142.63 and Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW) was up 1.39% or 0.83 points to 60.63 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL), which lost 2.72% or 4.43 points to trade at 158.52 in late trade. Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG) declined 2.57% or 3.83 points to end at 144.94 and Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CSCO) shed 2.16% or 1.21 points to 54.71.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Halliburton Company (NYSE:HAL) which rose 8.93% to 37.95, Baker Hughes Co (NYSE:BKR) which was up 8.67% to settle at 36.74 and Mosaic Co (NYSE:MOS) which gained 7.74% to close at 62.19.
The worst performers were Etsy Inc (NASDAQ:ETSY) which was down 5.35% to 136.98 in late trade, EPAM Systems Inc (NYSE:EPAM) which lost 4.86% to settle at 188.76 and MSCI Inc (NYSE:MSCI) which was down 4.69% to 465.26 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Hycroft Mining Holding Corporation (NASDAQ:HYMC) which rose 138.10% to 1.50, AgriFORCE Growing Systems Ltd (NASDAQ:AGRI) which was up 102.37% to settle at 3.42 and Hoth Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:HOTH) which gained 38.79% to close at 0.80.
The worst performers were Trean Insurance Group Inc (NASDAQ:TIG) which was down 51.70% to 3.40 in late trade, Fossil Group Inc (NASDAQ:FOSL) which lost 37.51% to settle at 9.08 and TherapeuticsMD Inc (NASDAQ:TXMD) which was down 27.50% to 0.29 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1836 to 1367 and 128 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2282 fell and 1463 advanced, while 253 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 6.84% to 30.23.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was up 0.68% or 13.60 to $2,001.80 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in April fell 2.64% or 2.87 to hit $105.83 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract fell 0.04% or 0.04 to trade at $109.15 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.05% to 1.10, while USD/JPY unchanged 0.00% to 116.13.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.58% at 98.53.
