Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Monday, as losses in the Oil & Gas, Consumer Goods and Industrials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.36%, while the S&P 500 index lost 0.45%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 0.33%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH), which rose 0.66% or 1.44 points to trade at 221.24 at the close. Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) added 0.58% or 0.35 points to end at 60.25 and Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CSCO) was up 0.53% or 0.25 points to 47.77 in late trade.
Biggest losers included 3M Company (NYSE:MMM), which lost 1.48% or 2.30 points to trade at 153.52 in late trade. Exxon Mobil Corp (NYSE:XOM) declined 1.38% or 0.95 points to end at 68.02 and The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV) shed 1.25% or 1.81 points to 143.15.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Kohls Corp (NYSE:KSS) which rose 2.50% to 48.36, Moodys Corporation (NYSE:MCO) which was up 2.28% to settle at 208.21 and E-TRADE Financial Corporation (NASDAQ:ETFC) which gained 2.25% to close at 37.22.
The worst performers were Jefferies Financial Group Inc (NYSE:JEF) which was down 5.87% to 17.32 in late trade, Noble Energy Inc (NYSE:NBL) which lost 4.23% to settle at 19.72 and Harley-Davidson Inc (NYSE:HOG) which was down 3.56% to 34.11 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Ritter Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:RTTR) which rose 50.05% to 0.380, Cancer Genetics Inc (NASDAQ:CGIX) which was up 35.40% to settle at 0.153 and Akcea Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:AKCA) which gained 31.33% to close at 19.87.
The worst performers were Sorrento Therape (NASDAQ:SRNE) which was down 25.52% to 1.78 in late trade, NGM Biopharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:NGM) which lost 20.44% to settle at 10.78 and Livexlive Media Inc (NASDAQ:LIVX) which was down 17.49% to 1.5100 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1812 to 1022 and 107 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1504 fell and 1115 advanced, while 108 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 4.81% to 17.86.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.93% or 14.05 to $1498.85 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November fell 0.02% or 0.01 to hit $52.80 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract unchanged 0.00% or 0.00 to trade at $58.41 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.01% to 1.0971, while USD/JPY fell 0.03% to 107.25.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.19% at 98.675.
