Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Basic Materials, Technology and Consumer Goods sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.54% to hit a new 1-month low, while the S&P 500 index lost 0.30%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.41%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX), which rose 3.14% or 3.69 points to trade at 121.19 at the close. Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW) added 0.86% or 0.45 points to end at 52.93 and Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) was up 0.34% or 0.68 points to 201.63 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which lost 5.32% or 2.62 points to trade at 46.62 in late trade. 3M Company (NYSE:MMM) declined 1.85% or 3.31 points to end at 175.28 and Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) shed 1.07% or 2.18 points to 200.72.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Tapestry Inc (NYSE:TPR) which rose 8.49% to 33.36, Perrigo Company PLC (NYSE:PRGO) which was up 6.99% to settle at 52.62 and Mylan NV (NASDAQ:MYL) which gained 3.97% to close at 22.76.
The worst performers were Chesapeake Energy Corporation (NYSE:CHK) which was down 7.27% to 2.680 in late trade, Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE:OXY) which lost 6.44% to settle at 56.33 and Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) which was down 5.32% to 46.62 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were American Electric Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:AETI) which rose 42.87% to 1.150, Control4 Co (NASDAQ:CTRL) which was up 39.60% to settle at 23.90 and Toughbuilt Industries Inc (NASDAQ:TBLT) which gained 28.26% to close at 1.20.
The worst performers were Stampscom Inc (NASDAQ:STMP) which was down 55.75% to 36.90 in late trade, Seanergy Maritime Holdings Corp (NASDAQ:SHIP) which lost 49.32% to settle at 1.850 and MER Telemanagement Solutions Ltd (NASDAQ:MTSL) which was down 44.10% to 0.9111 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1722 to 1228 and 114 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1517 fell and 1121 advanced, while 84 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 1.55% to 19.10.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was up 0.27% or 3.45 to $1284.85 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June fell 0.85% or 0.53 to hit $61.59 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract rose 0.03% or 0.02 to trade at $70.25 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.00% to 1.1220, while USD/JPY rose 0.02% to 109.77.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.12% at 97.270.
