Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Telecoms, Industrials and Consumer Goods sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.02%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.69%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 0.27%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Visa Inc (NYSE:V), which rose 0.06% or 0.08 points to trade at 130.72 at the close. Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) fell 0.11% or 0.11 points to end at 98.84 and Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) was down 0.29% or 0.54 points to 186.55 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG), which lost 2.30% or 1.72 points to trade at 73.17 in late trade. Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) declined 2.28% or 3.55 points to end at 151.91 and Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) shed 1.91% or 0.93 points to 47.67.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were General Motors Company (NYSE:GM) which rose 12.87% to 42.70, Corning Incorporated (NYSE:GLW) which was up 3.11% to settle at 27.17 and PVH Corp (NYSE:PVH) which gained 2.89% to close at 160.00.
The worst performers were Dollar Tree Inc (NASDAQ:DLTR) which was down 14.28% to 82.59 in late trade, Dollar General Corporation (NYSE:DG) which lost 9.37% to settle at 87.48 and Micron Technology Inc (NASDAQ:MU) which was down 7.96% to 57.59 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Madrigal Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:MDGL) which rose 144.96% to 265.6100, Viking Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:VKTX) which was up 101.01% to settle at 9.990 and Akers Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ:AKER) which gained 45.58% to close at 0.474.
The worst performers were Clearside Biomedical Inc (NASDAQ:CLSD) which was down 32.19% to 9.8600 in late trade, Scpharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:SCPH) which lost 30.10% to settle at 9.94 and Sigma Labs Inc (NASDAQ:SGLB) which was down 25.38% to 1.470 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1951 to 1118 and 122 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1515 fell and 1027 advanced, while 139 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 3.61% to 15.48.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was down 0.38% or 4.90 to $1296.60 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July fell 1.82% or 1.24 to hit $66.97 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract fell 0.08% or 0.06 to trade at $77.66 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.25% to 1.1692, while USD/JPY fell 0.07% to 108.83.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.11% at 93.96.
