Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Basic Materials, Consumer Services and Industrials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 1.06%, while the S&P 500 index climbed 1.06%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 1.75%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were DowDuPont Inc (NYSE:DWDP), which rose 8.07% or 4.35 points to trade at 58.27 at the close. Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) added 2.86% or 1.34 points to end at 48.22 and Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) was up 2.79% or 3.38 points to 124.70 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ), which lost 1.82% or 1.04 points to trade at 56.05 in late trade. McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD) declined 1.14% or 2.02 points to end at 174.88 and Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) shed 0.83% or 0.89 points to 105.92.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Wyndham Destinations Inc (NYSE:WYND) which rose 18.98% to 42.69, Newfield Exploration Company (NYSE:NFX) which was up 16.14% to settle at 23.46 and Wynn Resorts Limited (NASDAQ:WYNN) which gained 11.96% to close at 112.63.
The worst performers were Allstate Corporation (NYSE:ALL) which was down 6.01% to 89.97 in late trade, Fiserv Inc (NASDAQ:FISV) which lost 5.54% to settle at 74.91 and Hanesbrands Inc (NYSE:HBI) which was down 5.48% to 16.22 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Auris Medical Holding AG (NASDAQ:EARS) which rose 49.14% to 0.950, Sellas Life Sciences Group Inc (NASDAQ:SLS) which was up 36.07% to settle at 1.6600 and 1-800 FLOWERS.COM Inc (NASDAQ:FLWS) which gained 31.10% to close at 13.700.
The worst performers were YRC Worldwide Inc (NASDAQ:YRCW) which was down 25.79% to 6.13 in late trade, Internap Corp (NASDAQ:INAP) which lost 25.55% to settle at 6.380 and Freightcar America Inc (NASDAQ:RAIL) which was down 24.48% to 10.80 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2337 to 744 and 74 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2040 rose and 610 declined, while 66 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 8.90% to 19.34.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 1.86% or 22.60 to $1234.90 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in December fell 2.74% or 1.79 to hit $63.52 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract fell 3.63% or 2.74 to trade at $72.73 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.85% to 1.1408, while USD/JPY fell 0.20% to 112.71.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.83% at 96.10.
