  • “Truly shameful and pathetic anti-Bitcoin propaganda,” states crypto influencer Walker America.
  • America was responding to an episode from the Bloomberg show, Getting Warmer with Kal Penn.
  • “How many petrodollars did you [Kal Penn] get paid to spread disinformation for Bloomberg crypto?” asks America.

Crypto influencer Walker America responded to a Bloomberg video that contains anti-Bitcoin propaganda and rebuked former White House staff, Kal Penn who delivered it.

In his Twitter post, Walker America responded to footage from an episode of Getting Warmer with Penn, a Bloomberg TV show. In this episode, Penn is seen adopting a narrative that is directed against Bitcoin. America states, “I thought this was a joke at first, but it’s real…” He goes on to call it out as a “truly shameful and pathetic anti-Bitcoin propaganda from Bloomberg.”

America does not spare the presenter Penn either, and asks:

How many petrodollars did you get paid to spread disinformation for Bloomberg crypto?

In the clip, the former Hollywood actor speaks against Bitcoin and plays an angle that will invoke people’s love for the environment. Penn addresses that cryptocurrency is an energy hog and that it hurts the environment.

Penn explains that cryptocurrency relies on a network of computers, aka miners that create new money and verifies it with Proof-of-Work (PoW) systems and it is harmful for the environment. These miners are giant containers full of thousands and thousands of purpose-built computers that use massive amounts of electricity.

“Emissions from Bitcoins alone are estimated to be comparable to Austria. So if crypto is here to stay, the question becomes what do we do, about its massive carbon footprints,” says Penn. His solution comes in the form of Proof-of-stake system where miners simply pay to enter the lottery to win Bitcoin.

In an attempt to add authenticity to his monologue, Penn adds, “By some estimates, this (proof-of-stake) uses 99.9% less energy.” He also finds a good example in Ethereum, the blockchain that switched to proof-of-stake in a major upgrade known as The Merge.

America confronts the disinformation in Penn’s message in his tweet. Bitcoin rationalist Cory Klippsten along with many others in the crypto community feel the same. As an ending note, Penn urges Bitcoin to reduce their footprints by switching to renewable energy.

Although Penn wraps his message with a tinge of humor, according to the responses the video garnered, the crypto community did not find Penn’s message funny or caring but on the contrary quite the opposite.
