Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Friday, as gains in the Basic Materials, Oil & Gas and Financials sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Utilities, Consumer Goods and Telecoms sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.34%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.19%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 0.18%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were EI du Pont de Nemours and Company (N:DD), which rose 1.77% or 1.07 points to trade at 61.50 at the close. Boeing Company (N:BA) added 1.38% or 1.61 points to end at 118.42 and Goldman Sachs Group Inc (N:GS) was up 1.32% or 1.95 points to 150.14 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Coca-Cola Company (N:KO), which lost 2.32% or 1.02 points to trade at 43.13 in late trade. Wal-Mart Stores Inc (N:WMT) declined 2.26% or 1.54 points to end at 66.50 and Procter & Gamble Company (N:PG) shed 1.46% or 1.20 points to 81.13.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Marathon Oil Corporation (N:MRO) which rose 8.53% to 8.02, ONEOK Inc (N:OKE) which was up 7.56% to settle at 22.99 and Newfield Exploration Company (N:NFX) which gained 6.92% to close at 26.10.
The worst performers were Southwestern Energy Company (N:SWN) which was down 5.76% to 6.38 in late trade, PPL Corporation (N:PPL) which lost 4.28% to settle at 34.81 and Intuit Inc (O:INTU) which was down 4.27% to 95.80 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were RR Media Ltd (O:RRM) which rose 49.60% to 13.02, Scientific Games Corp (O:SGMS) which was up 35.18% to settle at 8.53 and ParkerVision Inc (O:PRKR) which gained 27.72% to close at 0.2299.
The worst performers were Republic Airways Holdings Inc (O:RJET) which was down 72.35% to 0.95 in late trade, Peregrine Pharmaceuticals Inc (O:PPHM) which lost 62.21% to settle at 0.4044 and Benitec Biopharma Ltd (O:BNTC) which was down 55.43% to 1.5600 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1936 to 1340 and 79 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1734 rose and 882 declined, while 31 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 2.83% to 19.65.
In commodities trading, Gold for April delivery was down 1.26% or 15.60 to $1223.20 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in April fell 0.57% or 0.19 to hit $32.88 a barrel, while the April Brent oil contract fell 0.17% or 0.06 to trade at $35.23 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.72% to 1.0939, while USD/JPY rose 0.88% to 113.97.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.68% at 98.10.
