Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Energy, Financials and Consumer Discretionary sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite added 0.06%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were First Quantum Minerals Ltd . (TSX:FM), which rose 7.59% or 2.35 points to trade at 33.31 at the close. Precision Drilling Corporation (TSX:PD) added 4.06% or 2.45 points to end at 62.78 and Advantage Oil & Gas Ltd. (TSX:AAV) was up 3.55% or 0.26 points to 7.58 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Sandstorm Gold Ltd . (TSX:SSL), which lost 4.61% or 0.33 points to trade at 6.83 in late trade. Enghouse Systems Ltd (TSX:ENGH) declined 4.43% or 1.55 points to end at 33.47 and Converge Technology Solutions Corp (TSX:CTS) shed 3.69% or 0.12 points to 3.13.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 510 to 459 and 102 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 1.59% to 11.12 a new 1-month low.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was up 0.07% or 1.45 to $1,970.35 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July rose 3.43% or 2.34 to hit $70.61 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract rose 3.36% or 2.46 to trade at $75.66 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.81% to 0.76, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.26% to 0.69.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.77% at 101.74.
