Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Healthcare, Consumer Discretionary and Consumer Staples sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite rose 0.39% to hit a new all time high.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Hudson's Bay Company (TSX:HBC), which rose 11.33% or 1.00 points to trade at 9.83 at the close. Hexo Corp (TSX:HEXO) added 4.49% or 0.1200 points to end at 2.7900 and ARC Resources Ltd . (TSX:ARX) was up 4.47% or 0.29 points to 6.78 in late trade.
Biggest losers included TMX Group Limited (TSX:X), which lost 4.66% or 5.22 points to trade at 106.89 in late trade. Yamana Gold Inc (TSX:YRI) declined 2.93% or 0.14 points to end at 4.64 and Semafo Inc . (TSX:SMF) shed 2.53% or 0.07 points to 2.70.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 613 to 423 and 130 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 26.28% to 14.08 a new 1-month high.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was down 0.41% or 5.95 to $1461.45 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in January fell 0.51% or 0.30 to hit $58.11 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract fell 0.25% or 0.16 to trade at $63.05 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.07% to 0.7529, while CAD/EUR rose 0.13% to 0.6844.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.16% at 98.328.
