Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the IT, Consumer Staples and Consumer Discretionary sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.18%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Alacer Gold Corp (TO:ASR), which rose 5.35% or 0.190 points to trade at 3.740 at the close. Firstservice Corp (TO:FSV) added 4.98% or 3.02 points to end at 63.71 and Sleep Country Canada Holdings Inc (TO:ZZZ) was up 4.26% or 1.35 points to 33.05 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Encana Corporation (TO:ECA), which lost 7.60% or 0.99 points to trade at 12.04 in late trade. Baytex Energy Corp (TO:BTE) declined 5.48% or 0.28 points to end at 4.83 and Bombardier Inc (TO:BBDb) shed 5.14% or 0.090 points to 1.660.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 631 to 482 and 153 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 1.86% to 15.87.
In commodities trading, Gold for December delivery was up 0.02% or 0.25 to $1318.05 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November rose 0.59% or 0.26 to hit $44.12 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract fell 0.22% or 0.10 to trade at $45.85 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.05% to 0.7570, while CAD/EUR rose 0.13% to 0.6786.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.19% at 95.97.
