Canada stocks higher at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite up 0.08%

Investing.com – Canada stocks were higher after the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Healthcare, IT and Consumer Staples sectors led shares higher.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.08%.

The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Colliers International Group (TO:CIG), which rose 9.91% or 5.31 points to trade at 58.90 at the close. Meanwhile, Brookfield Property Partners LP (TO:BPY_u) added 5.15% or 1.44 points to end at 29.42 and ProMetic Life Sciences Inc. (TO:PLI) was up 4.24% or 0.10 points to 2.46 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Bellatrix Exploration Ltd (TO:BXE), which fell 12.11% or 0.31 points to trade at 2.25 at the close. Penn West Petroleum Ltd. (TO:PWT) declined 11.18% or 0.19 points to end at 1.51 and Trilogy Energy Corp (TO:TET) was down 10.23% or 0.45 points to 3.95.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 750 to 595 and 191 ended unchanged.

Shares in Colliers International Group (TO:CIG) rose to 5-year highs; rising 9.91% or 5.31 to 58.90. Shares in Bellatrix Exploration Ltd (TO:BXE) fell to 5-year lows; losing 12.11% or 0.31 to 2.25. Shares in Penn West Petroleum Ltd. (TO:PWT) fell to 5-year lows; down 11.18% or 0.19 to 1.51.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 4.49% to 14.45.

Gold for December delivery was down 0.61% or 6.70 to $1084.00 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in September fell 1.34% or 0.61 to hit $45.12 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract fell 0.65% or 0.33 to trade at $49.66 a barrel.

CAD/USD was up 0.05% to 0.7585, while CAD/EUR fell 0.19% to 0.6955.

The US Dollar Index was down 0.07% at 97.97.
