Investing.com – Japan equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the Shipbuilding, Machinery and Precision Instruments sectors propelled shares higher.

At the close in Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 gained 0.65%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the Nikkei 225 were Showa Denko K.K. (T:4004), which rose 5.89% or 250.0 points to trade at 4495.0 at the close. Tokai Carbon Co., Ltd. (T:5301) added 5.16% or 77.0 points to end at 1569.0 and Softbank Corp. (T:9984) was up 5.09% or 448.0 points to 9250.0 in late trade.

Biggest losers included The Shizuoka Bank, Ltd. (T:8355), which lost 6.77% or 72.0 points to trade at 992.0 in late trade. Concordia Financial Group Ltd (T:7186) declined 5.51% or 29.0 points to end at 497.0 and Fukuoka Financial Group, Inc. (T:8354) shed 4.01% or 106.0 points to 2538.0.

Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2203 to 1311 and 173 ended unchanged on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

The Nikkei Volatility, which measures the implied volatility of Nikkei 225 options, was up 1.30% to 22.60.

In commodities trading, Crude oil for January delivery was up 1.06% or 0.60 to $57.28 a barrel. Meanwhile, Brent oil for delivery in January rose 0.60% or 0.40 to hit $67.16 a barrel, while the December Gold Futures contract fell 0.11% or 1.40 to trade at $1221.60 a troy ounce.

USD/JPY was down 0.03% to 112.79, while EUR/JPY rose 0.01% to 128.85.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.12% at 96.22.
