Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Technology, Oil & Gas and Consumer Goods sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.85% to hit a new all time high, while the S&P 500 index added 1.61%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 2.60%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA), which rose 5.04% or 2.17 points to trade at 45.20 at the close. Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) added 3.62% or 4.58 points to end at 131.18 and JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM) was up 3.35% or 4.41 points to 135.96 in late trade.
Biggest losers included 3M Company (NYSE:MMM), which lost 2.42% or 4.22 points to trade at 169.97 in late trade. Coca-Cola Co (NYSE:KO) declined 1.03% or 0.52 points to end at 50.00 and Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG) shed 0.91% or 1.28 points to 138.88.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were DXC Technology Co (NYSE:DXC) which rose 9.00% to 28.83, Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) which was up 7.23% to settle at 810.62 and EOG Resources Inc (NYSE:EOG) which gained 7.25% to close at 59.05.
The worst performers were ConAgra Foods Inc (NYSE:CAG) which was down 5.23% to 33.86 in late trade, CenterPoint Energy Inc (NYSE:CNP) which lost 4.05% to settle at 21.06 and Atmos Energy Corporation (NYSE:ATO) which was down 3.96% to 90.00 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Future Fintech Group Inc (NASDAQ:FTFT) which rose 153.57% to 4.2600, ENGlobal Corporation (NASDAQ:ENG) which was up 61.49% to settle at 4.7800 and Xunlei Ltd Adr (NASDAQ:XNET) which gained 43.03% to close at 4.82.
The worst performers were Digital Ally Inc (NASDAQ:DGLY) which was down 23.42% to 2.780 in late trade, Urban One Inc Class D (NASDAQ:UONEK) which lost 20.90% to settle at 1.400 and Addex Therapeutics Ltd (NASDAQ:ADXN) which was down 21.23% to 10.55 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1965 to 1128 and 53 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2300 rose and 744 declined, while 48 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 10.33% to 22.48.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 0.41% or 7.80 to $1916.40 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in February rose 0.67% or 0.34 to hit $50.97 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract rose 0.41% or 0.22 to trade at $54.52 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.46% to 1.2268, while USD/JPY rose 0.78% to 103.84.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.33% at 89.795.
