Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Technology, Consumer Services and Consumer Goods sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.08%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.87%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 2.47%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ), which rose 4.35% or 2.20 points to trade at 52.75 at the close. The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV) added 2.30% or 3.65 points to end at 162.02 and International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) was up 2.29% or 2.82 points to 125.93 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL), which lost 3.93% or 7.04 points to trade at 172.26 in late trade. Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) declined 2.91% or 9.75 points to end at 324.90 and Salesforce.com Inc (NYSE:CRM) shed 2.66% or 6.92 points to 253.12.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Newmont Goldcorp Corp (NYSE:NEM) which rose 8.80% to 59.00, AT&T Inc (NYSE:T) which was up 6.95% to settle at 23.71 and Accenture plc (NYSE:ACN) which gained 6.74% to close at 400.60.
The worst performers were Adobe Systems Incorporated (NASDAQ:ADBE) which was down 10.19% to 566.09 in late trade, Skyworks Solutions Inc (NASDAQ:SWKS) which lost 8.47% to settle at 146.39 and Xilinx Inc (NASDAQ:XLNX) which was down 8.24% to 199.78 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Adagio Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:ADGI) which rose 123.31% to 14.18, Kaixin Auto Holdings (NASDAQ:KXIN) which was up 36.29% to settle at 1.690 and Assertio Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:ASRT) which gained 23.70% to close at 1.6700.
The worst performers were Uniqure NV (NASDAQ:QURE) which was down 29.60% to 20.24 in late trade, Aerovate Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:AVTE) which lost 25.93% to settle at 9.14 and P3 Health Partners Inc (NASDAQ:PIII) which was down 21.47% to 8.74 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1773 to 1493 and 137 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2588 fell and 1247 advanced, while 203 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 6.64% to 20.57.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 2.03% or 35.80 to $1800.30 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in January rose 1.55% or 1.10 to hit $71.97 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract unchanged 0.00% or 0.00 to trade at $74.62 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.04% to 1.1332, while USD/JPY rose 0.00% to 113.71.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.55% at 95.948.
