Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Consumer Goods, Oil & Gas and Basic Materials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.10%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.05%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.01%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ), which rose 1.41% or 0.66 points to trade at 47.36 at the close. United Technologies Corporation (NYSE:UTX) added 1.14% or 1.33 points to end at 118.20 and Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) was up 0.78% or 1.19 points to 154.22 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG), which lost 2.51% or 2.26 points to trade at 87.74 in late trade. Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) declined 0.98% or 1.80 points to end at 181.71 and E I du Pont de Nemours & Co (NYSE:DD) shed 0.73% or 0.60 points to 81.61.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Edwards Lifesciences Corporation (NYSE:EW) which rose 10.49% to 109.30, Wyndham Worldwide Corp (NYSE:WYN) which was up 9.02% to settle at 100.54 and Perrigo Co (NYSE:PRGO) which gained 7.68% to close at 73.02.
The worst performers were Seagate Technology PLC (NASDAQ:STX) which was down 16.83% to 42.01 in late trade, CH Robinson Worldwide Inc (NASDAQ:CHRW) which lost 6.29% to settle at 72.81 and Dr Pepper Snapple Group Inc (NYSE:DPS) which was down 5.52% to 92.98 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Medical Tra (NASDAQ:MTBC) which rose 179.18% to 1.2200, Sajan Inc (NASDAQ:SAJA) which was up 42.86% to settle at 5.700 and Akebia Ther (NASDAQ:AKBA) which gained 33.40% to close at 12.50.
The worst performers were Uni-Pixel Inc (NASDAQ:UNXL) which was down 34.86% to 0.4300 in late trade, Flexion Theraptc (NASDAQ:FLXN) which lost 20.65% to settle at 20.60 and Ocean Power Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:OPTT) which was down 17.14% to 2.030 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1846 to 1374 and 39 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1575 rose and 910 declined, while 110 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 1.02% to 10.87.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was up 0.28% or 3.57 to $1270.77 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June fell 0.59% or 0.29 to hit $49.27 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract fell 0.86% or 0.45 to trade at $52.12 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.25% to 1.0907, while USD/JPY fell 0.01% to 111.08.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.11% at 98.83.
