Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Oil & Gas, Basic Materials and Industrials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.88%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.71%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.55%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS), which rose 1.90% or 2.01 points to trade at 108.04 at the close. Visa Inc (NYSE:V) added 1.07% or 1.46 points to end at 138.15 and American Express Company (NYSE:AXP) was up 0.39% or 0.39 points to 100.30 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX), which lost 3.19% or 4.07 points to trade at 123.52 in late trade. Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) declined 3.18% or 4.49 points to end at 136.76 and DowDuPont Inc (NYSE:DWDP) shed 2.23% or 1.51 points to 66.30.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Fastenal Company (NASDAQ:FAST) which rose 10.05% to 54.51, Keurig Dr Pepper Inc (NYSE:KDP) which was up 8.16% to settle at 24.00 and Activision Blizzard Inc (NASDAQ:ATVI) which gained 3.18% to close at 78.61.
The worst performers were American Airlines Group (NASDAQ:AAL) which was down 8.08% to 35.96 in late trade, IPG Photonics Corporation (NASDAQ:IPGP) which lost 4.91% to settle at 222.28 and Chesapeake Energy Corporation (NYSE:CHK) which was down 4.63% to 5.150 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Biocept Inc (NASDAQ:BIOC) which rose 115.22% to 7.920, Myos Rens Technology Inc (NASDAQ:MYOS) which was up 38.19% to settle at 1.990 and Pioneer Pow (NASDAQ:PPSI) which gained 7.00% to close at 5.35.
The worst performers were Simulations Plus Inc (NASDAQ:SLP) which was down 21.71% to 17.85 in late trade, Staffing 360 Solutions Inc (NASDAQ:STAF) which lost 20.61% to settle at 2.850 and Idera Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:IDRA) which was down 20.44% to 1.090 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2173 to 869 and 130 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1611 fell and 926 advanced, while 139 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 7.75% to 13.62.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was down 1.06% or 13.30 to $1242.10 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August fell 4.66% or 3.45 to hit $70.66 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract fell 6.12% or 4.83 to trade at $74.03 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.58% to 1.1676, while USD/JPY rose 0.92% to 112.02.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.67% at 94.48.
