Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Financials, Technology and Basic Materials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.98%, while the S&P 500 index lost 1.20%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 1.47%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were United Technologies Corporation (NYSE:UTX), which rose 0.52% or 0.52 points to trade at 100.89 at the close. McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD) added 0.49% or 0.62 points to end at 128.14 and 3M Company (NYSE:MMM) was up 0.22% or 0.36 points to 167.16 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS), which lost 3.08% or 4.78 points to trade at 150.41 in late trade. Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) declined 2.84% or 1.52 points to end at 52.00 and JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM) shed 2.53% or 1.49 points to 57.32.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Wynn Resorts Limited (NASDAQ:WYNN) which rose 11.66% to 99.99, Southwestern Energy Company (NYSE:SWN) which was up 4.30% to settle at 8.01 and Cabot Oil & Gas Corporation (NYSE:COG) which gained 4.12% to close at 23.27.
The worst performers were Freeport-McMoran Copper & Gold Inc (NYSE:FCX) which was down 7.91% to 8.85 in late trade, CarMax Inc (NYSE:KMX) which lost 7.17% to settle at 49.48 and F5 Networks Inc (NASDAQ:FFIV) which was down 5.94% to 97.72 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Relypsa Inc (NASDAQ:RLYP) which rose 67.33% to 24.28, Viking Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:VKTX) which was up 34.97% to settle at 1.93 and Cymabay Therapeu (NASDAQ:CBAY) which gained 29.50% to close at 1.80.
The worst performers were Pacific Sunwear of California Inc (NASDAQ:PSUN) which was down 39.89% to 0.0571 in late trade, Unwired Planet Inc (NASDAQ:UPIP) which lost 30.95% to settle at 6.940 and Lilis Energy Inc (NASDAQ:LLEX) which was down 24.15% to 0.1200 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2468 to 854 and 25 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1888 fell and 692 advanced, while 54 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 13.98% to 16.06.
In commodities trading, Gold for June delivery was up 1.52% or 18.60 to $1242.40 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in May fell 0.82% or 0.31 to hit $37.44 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract fell 0.60% or 0.24 to trade at $39.60 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.26% to 1.1371, while USD/JPY fell 1.29% to 108.37.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.08% at 94.57.
