Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Utilities, Technology and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Oil & Gas, Telecoms and Financials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.01%, while the S&P 500 index added 0.17%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 0.57%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD), which rose 0.84% or 1.67 points to trade at 201.31 at the close. Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) added 0.76% or 1.19 points to end at 157.49 and Visa Inc (NYSE:V) was up 0.71% or 0.95 points to 134.86 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ), which lost 0.99% or 0.49 points to trade at 48.81 in late trade. Exxon Mobil Corp (NYSE:XOM) declined 0.82% or 0.68 points to end at 82.42 and The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV) shed 0.70% or 0.92 points to 129.58.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Automatic Data Processing Inc (NASDAQ:ADP) which rose 3.89% to 139.30, Acuity Brands Inc (NYSE:AYI) which was up 3.77% to settle at 123.60 and Concho Resources Inc (NYSE:CXO) which gained 3.26% to close at 133.86.
The worst performers were Stryker Corporation (NYSE:SYK) which was down 4.26% to 162.54 in late trade, Apache Corporation (NYSE:APA) which lost 4.13% to settle at 42.76 and Marathon Petroleum Corporation (NYSE:MPC) which was down 2.97% to 75.46 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Galmed Pharmaceuticals Ltd (NASDAQ:GLMD) which rose 151.29% to 17.590, Ohr Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:OHRP) which was up 50.12% to settle at 0.325 and AGM Group Holdings Inc Class A (NASDAQ:AGMH) which gained 30.51% to close at 13.39.
The worst performers were Heat Biologics Inc (NASDAQ:HTBX) which was down 18.46% to 2.120 in late trade, Axovant Sciences Ltd (NASDAQ:AXON) which lost 18.16% to settle at 4.10 and SITO Mobile Ltd (NASDAQ:SITO) which was down 16.31% to 3.130 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1527 to 1520 and 146 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1387 rose and 1146 declined, while 140 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 0.24% to 12.32.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was down 0.28% or 3.60 to $1299.60 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July rose 0.17% or 0.11 to hit $66.21 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract fell 0.90% or 0.69 to trade at $75.77 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.30% to 1.1749, while USD/JPY rose 0.26% to 110.34.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.27% at 93.81.
