Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Friday, as gains in the Utilities, Healthcare and Basic Materials sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Oil & Gas, Consumer Services and Financials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.23%, while the S&P 500 index gained 0.28%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 0.28%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CSCO), which rose 2.12% or 0.97 points to trade at 46.75 at the close. Pfizer Inc (NYSE:PFE) added 1.83% or 0.65 points to end at 36.25 and Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) was up 1.45% or 0.86 points to 60.00 in late trade.
Biggest losers included JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM), which lost 1.85% or 1.85 points to trade at 98.16 in late trade. Exxon Mobil Corp (NYSE:XOM) declined 1.72% or 0.76 points to end at 43.52 and Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) shed 1.70% or 3.04 points to 175.66.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Intuitive Surgical Inc (NASDAQ:ISRG) which rose 7.69% to 650.74, The AES Corporation (NYSE:AES) which was up 5.04% to settle at 15.63 and Align Technology Inc (NASDAQ:ALGN) which gained 4.30% to close at 322.30.
The worst performers were Netflix Inc (NASDAQ:NFLX) which was down 6.52% to 492.99 in late trade, Nordstrom Inc (NYSE:JWN) which lost 5.69% to settle at 15.07 and Helmerich and Payne Inc (NYSE:HP) which was down 5.52% to 18.15 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were RumbleON Inc (NASDAQ:RMBL) which rose 139.37% to 25.6600, Verona Pharma PLC ADR (NASDAQ:VRNA) which was up 115.64% to settle at 10.20 and Salem Media Group Inc (NASDAQ:SALM) which gained 80.95% to close at 1.900.
The worst performers were Globus Maritime Ltd (NASDAQ:GLBS) which was down 28.64% to 0.1627 in late trade, Lake Shore Bancorp Inc (NASDAQ:LSBK) which lost 15.84% to settle at 11.32 and Capitala Finance Corp (NASDAQ:CPTA) which was down 15.10% to 2.53 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1550 to 1300 and 81 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1561 rose and 1137 declined, while 65 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 8.29% to 25.68 a new 1-month low.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was up 0.66% or 11.80 to $1812.10 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August fell 0.39% or 0.16 to hit $40.59 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract fell 0.58% or 0.25 to trade at $43.12 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.42% to 1.1431, while USD/JPY fell 0.25% to 107.00.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.37% at 95.963.
